Dan Deacon :: Making Waves in the Name of Improv

21 May 2014

★ Kelly Louise

With several months and an entire season sitting between now and the High Zero Festival, the High Zero Foundation organized a stellar fundraiser at the 5th Dimension last week featuring some awesome music and art in an intimate setting (although I’m being quite generous here describing the 5th Dimension).

After celebrating its 15th year last year, High Zero will host one of the biggest improv festivals in the world welcoming musicians from around to globe to partake in the Red Room Collective’s programming for the 16th year. This year the festival lands mid-September, with a line-up already consisting of local Wendel Patrick and musicians like Okkyung Lee (Korea) hailing from afar.

MC’ed by the charismatic Lexie Mountain, attendees of the High Zero fundraiser were welcomed with some booty-shaking and a silent auction to jams by DJ Jason Willet, in an aura reminiscent of an old college frat (with obviously better music). With performances from several artists including Horse Lords, the highlight of the night, albeit a short one, was Dan Deacon’s one-song set.

In typical Dan Deacon style, he set up camp  in the center of the 5th Dimension with his Macbook and wave generators on a table amid the crowd. Sans his keyboard due to the elevator’s refusal to cooperate, Dan Deacon put on a half hour long improv set akin to the likes of the  non-idiomatic improvisation of the High Zero Festival itself. While some were disappointed at the prospects a show at the 5th Dimension could provide, Deacon’s performance was beautifully entrancing and captivating even without his keys. While it did leave a bit to be desired, there’s comfort in knowing a festival is on the horizon with a bigger offering.
