Pre-Preakness :: Hats & Horses

14 May 2014

★ Samantha Steiner

This Saturday, the 139th running of the Preakness Stakes will officially be underway directly from Pimlico Race Course.

Cue the thrills and excitement, as “Triple Crown” hopeful and favorite, California Chrome, makes its way to Baltimore this week to train for what could ultimately be the race of its life, after winning the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, in the fastest two minutes of all of sports. Decked out in purple courtesy of jockey, Victor Espinoza, it should be considered no small coincidence, that this horse is ready for its close up in “Charm City,” in honor of  Superbowl champions, the Baltimore Ravens.

Joining California Chrome this weekend for all of the bragging rights are: Kid Cruz, Pablo Del Monte, Social Inclusion, Ride On Curlin, Dynamic Impact, Bayern, Ring Weekend, Ria Antonia, and General A Rod, amongst others, who are yet to be determined, as far as their participation on the ballot is concerned.

No stranger to the competition, bravely returning again this year is owner and trainer, Bob Baffert, with trustworthy, and first ever female jockey, Rosie Napravnik. As they look for victory, it’s a tough road ahead, but no small feat, goes unmeasured.

In anticipation of this week’s big event, the festivities are just ramping up, as fans and locals will get a chance to hang out at Infieldfest, and be able to partake in debauchery to the tune of Eli Young Band, Lorde, The Fray, and Switchfoot concerts.

Which prospect are you going to bet your bankroll on?
