Chefs Behind Bars…it sounds like culinary Cops, or some sort of correctional-based reality show. If you’re like me, you’re already half tempted. But the actual premise is even more delicious: it’s a cocktail competition between seven of Baltimore’s best chefs, joining forces April 22nd for a great cause. No, that’s not to get you tipsy, although it’s bound to happen. The event, which also kicks off Wit and Wisdom’s waterfront patio opening, is to benefit Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. No Kid Hungry is exactly as it sounds: a national non-profit organization that aims to end childhood hunger in America through activism, community service, and various food programs.
Zack Mills, head chef at the Harbor East restaurant, will serve as the host competitor for the evening, while guest chefs representing various Charm City neighborhoods will be on hand to throw down the gauntlet, from Aggio’s Bryan Voltaggio to Aldo’s Sergio Vitale. A “people’s choice” award will be presented based on tips, and a “judges’ choice” award will be based on the decision of seven local industry experts.
Though competition is sure to be intense, Chef Mills admits that “[because all of the participants] are amazing, we are more in competition with ourselves than anything.” He didn’t want to predict a frontrunner, or even speculate on what other chefs will be mixing up, but he did tease that he’s planning on making “something with pork infused Jim Beam.” And while you might expect most of the libations to be complex concoctions, Mills says, “I think almost anything goes nowadays with cocktails, as long as the flavors are balanced. I’m trying to use the same approach I would in the kitchen and just keep it simple and seasonal.”
This is a cocktail-connoisseurs dream, sampling seven, one-of-a-kind drinks, handcrafted by masters of flavor profiling. In addition, Wit and Wisdom will be providing small bites against a panoramic view of the harbor. Not to mention that you’re literally drinking to benefit America’s youth. For $40, that’s a win-win-win situation.
