Transmodern 2012

30 May 2012

Pushed norms are what keep the art world so interesting. The 9th Annual Transmodern Festival helped to make sure that innovative artists who stray from tradition actually get the credit they deserve. From Thursday, May 17th to Sunday, May 20th, Baltimore got their radical on at a handful of venues ( The Current Space, Alley-OooooooPs!, D:center @ MAP, the 14Kt Cabaret, and the Pedestrian Service Exquisite @ Baltimore’s Farmers Market and Bazaar) as colorful and as the shows and performances they hosted. Highlights of the long weekend included art installations and video projections on crowd surfing, the beloved sport of many DIY-loving Baltimore folks. The work on crowd surfing was curated by Katie Kehoe and included performance by local punk rawk duo Weekends (Adam Lempel and Brendan Sullivan), who tore up D:center from the throne of the hands of their audience. The space also  hosted the Effervescent Collective, whose piece The Peanut Gallery ran for a half an hour on both Friday and Saturday. Transmodern, as is obvious from the following photo essay, exposed the wonderful weirdness of Baltimore art.

Last week we ran a story by Robin Gunkel and photos by Philip Laubner on F.E.A.S.T. – an interactive dinner experience at this years Transmodern. Click here to see the story and photos.
