Spank Rock

13 March 2012

★ Theresa Keil & Larry Cohen

Friday night found us at Golden West Café in Hampden, to see Spank Rock  perform. Naeem Juwan, AKA Spank Rock is a Baltimore boy who came out of the “hip-grinding basement of the Baltimore Bass movement” (spankrock.com), before moving to Philadelphia to continue his music career.

He performed Friday night to a sold-out hometown crowd, a crowd clearly made of devout long-time fans, as evidenced by the frenzied dancing, fist-pumping and non-stop singing along to every song.

He was accompanied onstage by Baltimore’s Adam Gonzo , who kept the beats going while Spank Rock deftly played the crowd; pulling fans onstage to dance, standing on sound equipment to get closer to the crowd, and sharing his mic with would-be performers who knew every word to each song.

The show was presented by Taxidermy Lodge and Emily Rabbit, and also featured Baltimore DJ Simon Phoenix and Philly’s Po Po  (Mad Decent).
