WHAT WEEKLY

Land and Peoples

26 October 2011

★ Tedd Henn

The Microshow series resumed, recently, at Mobtown Studios thus satiating music fans who long for intimate experiences with the musicians they admire. I personally didn’t get the chance to attend the Lands and Peoples show but I’m listening to the tracks recorded that night as I’m writing this. The songs from this performance are hauntingly nostalgic. They conjure imagery from a time before we were born when road trips meant huge cars barreling down narrow highways in the middle of the night, back when cigarettes were an accessory, not an impediment. It’s the soundtrack to a movie where the main character is a bad ass with a baby face who drinks from a flask all the time but never stumbles or slurs. It’s rock-a-billy tiptoeing around folk wrapped in powerful harmonies. The kind we forgot once moved us so. At least, that’s the way I hear it

Most importantly it’s gorgeous music and you can listen and download it here.

Lands & Peoples has become one of my favorite bands here in Baltimore, not to mention one of the nicest and most giving. Literally impossible to classify, they blend aspects of pop, folk and musique concrète. Fresh off playing a few shows with Wye Oak and Secret Mountains they were able to squeeze in a Microshow here at Mobtown. They certainly are a band to catch live and this show is no exception. Their perfect yet interesting harmonies blend seamlessly here as well as adding a their friend Evan on viola to the set. Enjoy the show!” –Mat Leffler-Schulman, Mobtown Studios
