WHAT WEEKLY

Jazzway 6004

★ whatweekly

Occasionally, in the midst of our exploration of the city, we run into a person, place or thing that is particularly inspiring. Jazzway 6004 afforded us the convergence of all three. Last Thursday we had the unique pleasure of attending an improvisational gem featuring legendary jazz percussionist Louis Moholo-Moholo and local piano great Lafayette Gilchrist. Jazzway 6004 is the home of Marianne Matheny-Katz and Howard Katz. Once a month Howard and Marianne open their house to the public to host some of the most compelling jazz performances in the city. What makes it even more special is that the performers walk away with all the profits. Much respect for Marianne and Howard.

Bernard Lyons from Creative Differences and music journalist Bill Shoemaker organized and recorded this event. (We can’t wait to get our ears on that recording.)

Creative Differences is dedicated to pairing jazz musicians without rehearsal for the sake of creating beautiful and daring music that may never have been written. Bill Shoemaker has been published in nearly every jazz periodical in Europe and the U.S. and currently contributes to his own online publication PointOfDeparture.org.

What Weekly would like to extend a special thanks to Marianne Matheny-Katz and Howard Katz. They’ve created something truly magical. Jazzway 6004 is as inviting a venue as one could hope for and the performance was unforgettable.

This is one of those gems that spotlight our city’s hospitality and creative potential all under one roof.
