Super-talented photographer Josh Sisk had a chance to swing by the Copycat and see Goblin Mold practice this past weekend. Goblin Mold is made up of Alex Leach, Nick Hoegberg and Cicero Ferrante . It was great hanging out while Josh shot some band pictures for them.
Cicero and I followed up by email:
Tell us a bit about your practice space at the copycat?
Right now we are practicing in our apartment at the Copycat. Honestly we have only ever practiced here. Our music equipment is set up in Nick’s room. Practice is real low key, we hangout a lot. We were friends before we started this band. I would like to think that practicing in our living space helps our music reflect our lifestyles. I don’t really know what else there is to say about Nick’s room… he needs to do his laundry?
What advantages does Baltimore have over a city like NY in getting a band started? Cheap rent? Easy access to bookers and venues?
Well we all grew up in Baltimore, and were roommates last year. Nick and I still live together and Alex lives down the street. We recorded our first and only album “Do you like me?” in Josh Dean’s apartment. Much love Josh Dean. He lives right below us. We went on tour with our friends (and neighbors) Wing Dam last fall. The scene is really small here, everything we have accomplished has sort of fallen in place. Im not sure what its like to be a musician in other cities, I hope it’s as convenient.
What frustrates you the most about playing music in Baltimore?
The city wide crack down on DIY venues. I was at the Halloween show at Coward Shoe when it was raided. That event was traumatic for me. I have a lot of fond memories in that venue. I am sad that the scene is becoming more regimented as I am becoming a part of it. That being said, I am very thankful for the venues that are operating today. Without legitimate venues giving us attention we wouldn’t have been able to get out music out there. I have never felt short-changed.

Whats your favorite non-Goblin Mold band in Baltimore?
The Snails. Their online presence is sort of non-existent. If you haven’t seen them play live I heavily encourage you to do so. Also, Dave Fell Band rips.
What upcoming shows/projects should we know about?
We are playing Hopkins Spring Fest in April. I heard jcole is on the bill. I also heard that it’s free. We are also playing at Metro Gallery on the 26th of this month with Taco Cat and Dungeon Kids. Their sound system rules; we are stoked.
