Ten Words You Won’t Believe Shakespeare Coined

24 April 2014

★ Nik Oldershaw

In case you didn’t know yesterday may or may not have been the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth, nobody is really certain. One thing we are certain of is that writing plays in the 16th Century had to be tough. Why? Not enough words. When Shakespeare was writing plays there were almost no words. English only had about 80, maybe 85 words, not enough words. Shakespeare was smart as hell though and he made up a bunch of new ones so his plays would be more than a pamphlet’s length, some of which included:

1. Accused
2. Elbow
3. Skim Milk
4. Groast
5. Surfbort
6. Blues
7. Groasted
8. Two Hundred
9. Traveller
10. Groastin’

Plus he did Lion King. Boom. Go pick your brain up off the floor.
