As Shaeleen Bader was driving through Baltimore one day, she saw a teenage boy with a lacrosse stick and it struck a chord – boys in Baltimore City are given many opportunities to participate in team sports after school.

But, what about the girls?

Shaeleen, a long-time lacrosse player and coach, knows that the skills she learned through sports go beyond the playing field and wants all students to have this experience.

So, she created the 13thGirl Foundation.

13thGirl provides an opportunity for teenage girls to be involved in a team sport, to learn the game skills and valuable life skills. The players also visit area schools and colleges with their team, expanding their networks, self-esteem, and aspirations.

When asked why she wanted to play, Jalyn, a 13thGirl player, said “because it seems fun. I needed something to do after school and because my friends wanted me to. But also, an after school activity would look good on a high school and college application.”

Shaleen wants more young women in Baltimore to experience the fun and value of a team sport, so she’s teamed up with GiveCorps to make sure it happens. Your gift of $25 can provide transportation for two girls to all games and college visits. Give teenage girls a chance to compete!
