Seth Sherman

★ Justin Allen

When the Moment Is True, Seth Sherman’s new album, came to us by way of Austin, Texas from our friend and Baltimore native Drew Schlegel who plays bass in the band.

Typically I’m a little hesitant to agree to review music submitted by friends but this time I’m glad to do it. This is a great album. It feels good to listen to. One might assume that the songs were all written by a completely well adjusted individual, in an idyllic setting, maybe seaside or on a sunny front porch way out in the country where the stars are still bright and the air is full of sounds critters make way outside the city limits.

The music isn’t complicated. The exploration happens in the narrative. This is great storytelling with a soundtrack. The music conjures impressions of Tom Petty, Buddy Holly, Van Morrison, though the stories are all Sherman. He’s a unique voice singing from a familiar stage. This is one for the ipod and we’ll be waiting to see what he does next.

You can catch the band as come through at Looney’s in Bel Air in the 12th.
