Adam Robinson sent me this heads up about the 5th Annual Open Space Publications and Multiples Fair happening this weekend. I am glad he reminded me because it is always a fun event. I’ll just let Adam tell you about it:
For the fifth year, Open Space is hosting the Publications and Multiples Fair, a celebration of books and artist prints and whatever other things that get produced in multiple. The two day event (this Saturday and Sunday) will feature 80 different artists and collectives and publishers, from Ehse Records to MICA to Wham City to Publishing Genius (my own press).
Along with the fair, where you can walk amid table after table of eye dropping poster art, books, comics, newspapers—even tee shirts and jewelry, there will be several programs, including readings, screenings and lectures.
I keep saying “and” a lot while trying to describe the event, which makes sense for a thing that has the word “Multiples” in its title.
The whole schedule is here, but I made a list of what I surely don’t want to miss in this action packed weekend:
FRIDAY
Baltimore 1 — (Satellite Program) Friday
Marcus Civin has put together an exhibition of personal objects from people who live in the City Arts building. What could that be? What Weekly wrote about it previously, here.
SATURDAY
The Fair — D Center, Saturday and Sunday, noon – 6pm
This is your starting point. Come to the D Center to check out what’s what in Baltimore printed arts.
Preparing Images for Digital Printing — MICA Studio Center, 3pm
Liz Donadio runs Color Wheel, an artist-run digital print lab in the CopyCat (as in, not Kinkos). She’ll be talking about how to prepare files for digital printing, which is an important subject made crucial as the technology becomes more consumer friendly and widespread.
Dash Shaw — MICA Studio Center, 3:30pm
Dash Shaw is a comic book artist with lots of great books, published by great comic book publishers like Fantagraphics and … Pantheon (most noted for putting out books of post-WWII intellectuatl rigor).
2 Freak 2 Flash — Floristree, 9pm
This is, I think, a screening of work by comedians and performance artists, including Alan Resnick and omg Dynasty Handbag, that “stirs the surreal into waking life.”
SUNDAY
Sunday you should go back to the fair and buy those things you were looking at yesterday, but had forgotten your backpack to carry things in.
Poetry Brunch — The Crown, 1pm
Eight poets are slated to read, including Doreen Bolger. She’s been to every arts event in Baltimore, I think. It will be nice to see what her poems have to say. I’m not sure what the brunch will consist of.
Mickey Zacchilli — MICA Student Center, 4:30
Zacchilli is a comics and printmaking artist from Providence, who will be in town to discuss not just self-publishing, but the business questions behind it.
