Watch The Olsen Twins Tip a Black Man with Fried Chicken

08 April 2014

★ Nik Oldershaw

Last night a friend and myself were having a conversation about the weirdest things we remembered watching on television when we were younger and the way those half remembered fragments become more distorted over time. He was insistent there was an episode of Full House where Uncle Jesse uttered the phrase “I’m sick of all your shit” which is, of course, ridiculous the FCC would never allow it. What the FCC did allow though was this scene from the 1992 television film “To Grandmother’s House We Go” where Mary Kate and Ashley each throw a drumstick into the hat of an african-american street musician. It’s not even played off innocently, the saxophonist gives them a look that seems to indicate the film is entirely aware of how tasteless and dated it’s being. It might be that I’m making a big deal out of nothing, after all 1992 was very a different time.
